2021 Family Law from the Experts: Making Dollars Make Sense — Faculty Bios

 

 

Judge Thomas Trent Lewis (Ret.) is a neutral with Signature Resolution providing mediation, arbitration, and privately compensated judge pro tem services in family law. From 2016 until 2019, he was the Supervising Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court Family Law Division. Judge Lewis became a CFLS in 1985 and was inducted into AAML in 1987. He was inducted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Law in 2016. He served on the Family Law and Juvenile Advisory Commission until 2014, and he is a past faculty member for the judicial training committee for family law. He is a past president of the California Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. He is also a contributing author of The Rutter Group’s California Practice Guide: Family Law and serves as Program Director for CFLR. In 2018, he was named Family Law Judge of the Year by the Family Law Section of the California Lawyers Association, and ACFLS awarded him their Hall of Fame Award, the highest award bestowed by them. In 2010, he was awarded the Outstanding Jurist Award by AAML’s Southern California Chapter, and in 2014, he became the first emeritus member of the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists. Among his many awards are the 2015 Los Angeles County Bar Association Family Law Section Spencer Brandeis Award, the 2016 Southern California Inn of Courts Outstanding Jurist Award, and the 2017 San Fernando Valley Bar Association Stanley Mosk Legacy of Justice Award. In 2018, he received the California Lawyers Association Family Law Judge of the Year Award. In 2018, he was awarded the Association of Family Law Specialists (ACFLS) Hall of Fame Award, the highest honor bestowed by ACFLS. Judge Lewis was also awarded the Southern California American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Person of the Year Award.


Anne C. Kiley, CFLS, has been practicing family law since 1990 and has been a Certified Family Law Specialist since 2000. She is a partner at Elkins Kalt in Century City, where she heads their family law department. Her Martindale-Hubbell rating is "AV," and she has been recognized as a Southern California Super Lawyer by the Los Angeles Times Magazine since 2005, and as one of the Top 50 women attorneys in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times Magazine since 2011; she has also been included in Best Lawyers in America since 2007. Ms. Kiley is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and an adjunct professor of law at the University of Southern California Gould Law School, where she has taught Family Law since 2007. Ms. Kiley is a frequent lecturer for CFLR/The Rutter Group and has made several presentations on family law issues for county bar organizations and other groups.



Christopher C. Melcher, CFLS, is a Fellow of the AAML, specializing in complex family law litigation with a focus on premarital agreements. He also handles appeals of family law judgments and writ proceedings. His clients include celebrities, tech founders, and executives of public companies. He has presented over 200 continuing legal education programs and published books and articles on family law.



Ronald S. Granberg, CFLS, is a past President of the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, a past President of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers’ Northern California Chapter, and a past President of the Monterey County Bar Association.  He has received the ACFLS Hall of Fame Award, the AAML NorCal Chapter Fellow of the Year Award, the AAML SoCal Chapter Family Law Person of the Year Award, and the Monterey County Bar Association Lewis L. Fenton Excellence in Advocacy Award.  Ron is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.  He taught Legal Research and Writing at the Monterey College of Law for 37 years, taught Trial Advocacy there for 24 years, and received its Professor of the Year Award six times.  He has been an instructor at the eight-day Family Law Trial Advocacy Institute co-sponsored by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and the American Bar Association.  Ron has published 21 family law articles, is the author of California Legal Research, and is a co-author of the Continuing Education of the Bar publication Crossover Issues in Estate Planning and Family Law.  He has made over 200 professional presentations.



Tracy Farryl Katz, Esq., CPA, is a partner at Gursey | Schneider LLP where she specializes in forensic accounting. Ms. Katz’s expertise covers a multitude of litigation support services including business appraisals, determinations of gross cash flow available for support, net spendable evaluations, pension plan allocations, stock option apportionments, characterizations of assets, analyses of reimbursement claims, and lifestyle analyses. She is also a frequent lecturer at various continuing education seminars. Ms. Katz has authored and co-authored articles and/or lectured on the use of forensic accountants in marital dissolution, celebrity goodwill and in analyzing pre-and post-nuptial agreements, as well as complex asset tracings and child and spousal support for high income earners.  Ms. Katz is a member of both the national and state societies for Certified Public Accountants and a past Chair of the Family Law Section of her state society; she is also a member of the Family Law Section of the Beverly Hills and California State Bar Associations, as well as a liaison member of the executive committee of the Family Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation’s Forensic & Business Valuation Division admitted Ms. Katz as one of only 28 Charter Members from across the nation.


Jill Hersh, CFLS, a Certified Family Law Specialist, has been practicing law for more than 40 years and is the managing attorney at the Hersh FamilyLaw Practice ("HFLP"), a mediation, transactional, trial, and appellate family law firm. Jill is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the recipient of the 2006 CLAY Award for her work in Family Law. HFLP specializes in complex family law matters including complex and high assets, high conflict parenting disputes, and international family law financial, jurisdictional, and custody issues, including Hague Convention disputes. HFLP also has policies in place to provide services to less-resourced individuals, provide pro bono services, and provide legal services in areas of social/public policy. Jill has argued before the Supreme Courts of California and Vermont and was the lead trial and appellate lawyer in the published decisions, Estate of MacDonald, Marriage of deGuigne, K.M. v. E.G., and In Re Guardianship of Olivia J.  HFLP was trial counsel and Jill was the appellate lawyer in Marriage of Priem. Marie Ebersbacher, CPA, ABV, CFF, CFE, is the CBIZ Forensic Consulting Group Senior Managing Director and has served as the firm’s Forensic and Financial Services National Practice Leader since 2010. Marie’s practice primarily involves high net worth marital estate dissolutions, including multi-year and multi-account complex tracings, apportionment analyses, and business valuations. Marie earned her CPA license in 2001 and holds the designations of ABV (Accredited in Business Valuation) and CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics), presented by the AICPA; and CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner), presented by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) Foundation Business and Valuation Division and former Chair of CalCPA’s Forensic Services Section State Steering Committee. Marie speaks frequently on forensic accounting topics at state and national accounting and valuation conferences and has presented to the California Judicial College and at California Family Law Report© Advanced Family Law Courses.
